It took me a second to figure out why this album sounded so familiar to me, even though I didn’t know any of the songs – it’s because I spent the first five years of the 00’s playing a LOT of Dance Dance Revolution. A surprising fraction of the songs were in exactly this mode, despite it not being a particularly Japanese idiom. I suspect it’s because the game needed easy songs to bridge the gap for new players until they could handle actual dance music, and this stuff has a very clear beat at a slow tempos.
