The problem with parodying Baywatch is, first, the show already was pretty ridiculous. I.e. plots involving ghosts, UFOs, surfboard-stealing giant octopi, a Gilligan’s Island fantasy episode, etc. Second, there already was a parody version of Baywatch, a TV series called Son of the Beach.
Maybe it would have worked better if they had taken a Galaxy Quest approach: most of the crew think they’re just getting a cushy summer job, and then they’re thrust into a situation where there are real stakes.
