The Overview: Scott Pilgrim vs. the World

A few months ago, we relaunched The Overview, our catalogue of alternative commentary tracks to your favorite movies. When we made the announcement, we solicited feedback about what to cover next from you, the readers of Overthinking It.  You gave us a number of great suggestions, which have filled up our streaming queues well into the fall.

In our newest installment of this series, we got together to watch and discuss Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, which was suggested by reader MoxDiamond.

This movie, which just celebrated its fifth anniversary, falls right at the sweet spot of many parts of the popular culture that are near and dear to the gang here at Overthinking It:  it stars Michael Cera, is directed by Edgar Wright, has songs by Beck, is based on a comic book by Bryan Lee O’Malley, and borrows many motifs from classic video games.  To tackle all of these different angles, we summoned a League of (Not Evil) Overthinkers: Rachel D, Pete Fenzel, Richard Rosenbaum, John Perich, and Ryan Sheely. We had a fun and wide-ranging conversation covering everything from magical realism, to parallels with The Pilgrim’s Progress, to the anxieties of early-2000s indie rock, to the cultural geography of contemporary Toronto.  Put on your favorite thrift store t-shirt, get together your significant other (and his or her seven evil exes), and join us for a fun Scott Pilgrim viewing party.

To get in on the fun, just purchase our commentary track in our online store for only $1.99.  At the beginning of the audio track, we’ll provide you with the instructions on how to sync our commentary track up with your DVD or stream of the film, and once you hit play, it will be like you are watching the film with your friends from Overthinking It right in your own living room.
