It should be noted that, upon playing the Pitchfork Music Festival with a band surrounding her, Ms. Garbus ended the show with the pronouncement,”WE are Tune-Yards!” And, with that, what once was nebulous has become concrete.

If you’re reading the comments of this post, and you haven’t seen the documentary/concert film Standing in the Shadows of Motown, you need to stop what you’re doing now and go see it immediately. It’s mostly about the Motown house band, the Funk Brothers, and goes in-depth into the making of this album and its collaborative creative process.

Related, have a listen to this instrumental version of the title track. I love how the rhythm guitar suddenly becomes vital in this version, even though its’ something I’m barely aware of in the vocal version:

I really would not mind a Super Deluxe series of podcasts on this album. It’s a work of staggering genius and should be celebrated and discussed as such.
