Given all the talk about Edith’s Nazi adventures, I’m surprised it wasn’t mentioned that Edward VIII (and his divorced spouse) had fascist sympathies. It is rumoured that his abdication was pushed by the government more for this reason than for his dalliance with a divorcee).
I think the Britsh audience, would have been well aware of the future of the then-Prince of Wales, including his Nazi-inclined sentiments. I think it makes Lord Grantham’s determination to protect the monarchy’s reputation all the more poignant and principled.
